DUNNVILLE—Edgewater Gardens, in co-operation with the Haldimand Norfolk Public Health Unit, has declared a COVID-19 outbreak on the first floor of the long-term care home after one staff member tested positive for the virus.
“This one employee was found to be positive for COVID-19 as part of the routine, two-week testing thatallstaffmembersofOntario’slong-termcarehomeshavebeenundergoingforseveralmonthsnow,” saysinterimpresidentandCEOSharonMoore. “Thispersonhadexperiencednosymptomsofthevirusand is now in self-isolation at home.”
All the other Edgewater employee test results have thus far come back negative , with a few still outstanding.
All residents at Edgewater were swabbed for the virus this morning, and employees working on the 32- bed, first floor unit are now practicing enhanced infection control – wearing face shields and gowns, in addition to the routine masks and gloves.
Visiting at the long-term care home had been already been restricted since an outbreak was declared in theInpatientUnitattheadjacentHaldimandWarMemorialHospitalonOctober24,2020. Thismeans only two caregivers – and no general visitors – have been permitted to visit residents at any one time.
Over at the hospital, a total of six staff members of the Inpatient Unit have now tested positive for COVID-19.TheInpatientUnitremainsinoutbreak. Allsixhospitalemployeesweredirectedtoself- isolate at home.
At this time, no patients on the Inpatient Unit have tested positive for the virus.
“We now seem to be fully in the anticipated second wave of the virus, and we are reminding ouremployees to be extra careful about infection control, and urge members of the community to remainvigilant as well,” Moore says.
