CALEODNIA/DUNNVILLE—Tragedy marked the Civic Holiday long weekend in Haldimand with two separate fatal collisions. A third fatal collision occurred just days later.

On August 2, 2024 at approximately 3:50 p.m., members of the Haldimand detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police responded to a two-vehicle collision on Argyle Street South in Caledonia.
“As a result of the collision, one person was located deceased at the scene and four others were taken to surrounding hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries,” read a news release sent out by Constable Michelle Murphy.
The deceased was later described as a 57-year-old woman from Markham.
Allegedly, one of the drivers fled the scene on foot “and with the assistance of the West Region Emergency Response Team, West Region OPP Canine Unit, and Six Nations Police, the driver was located a short time later and was taken into custody without incident. They were taken to hospital with minor injuries.”
The driver, a 26-year-old man from Six Nations of the Grand River First Nation, was charged with: dangerous operation of a motor vehicle causing death; failure to stop after an accident resulting in death; and operation of a motor vehicle while prohibited. None of these charges have been proven in court; the accused was held in custody and scheduled to appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Cayuga on August 6, 2024. Updates were not available as of press time.
Later on August 2, around 8:45 p.m., police, firefighters, and paramedics were called to a single vehicle collision involving a motorcycle on Broad Street East in Dunnville.
The motorcyclist, an 18-year-old from Denfield, was transported to Haldimand War Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased.
Members of the Haldimand OPP, as well as the Technical Collison Investigators (TCI) and Traffic Incident Management Enforcement (TIME) Team, were at the scene as part of the ongoing investigation.
Haldimand OPP returned to Dunnville on August 6 around 6:15 p.m. for a three-vehicle collision on Haldimand Road 17, which was closed between Jarden and Burke roads for investigation.
“Sadly, one driver was pronounced deceased after being transported to hospital. Another driver has been taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries,” wrote OPP on Facebook. “Our thoughts are with those affected.”
