President, Dunnville Horticultural Society
This month is my last as president of the Dunnville Horticultural Society. It is a bittersweet note I am tasked with writing. It has been an honour and a privilege to serve our members and community for the past four years.
Our club has undertaken many projects during that time. Notably, the refurbishment of the Centennial Park Monument and the Thompson Creek Eco Centre, both of which were overseen by Past President Debbie Thomas. Debbie was a great help to me as I began as president and continues to assist me still! Thank you, Debbie.
We have also seen the naming of two heritage trees, the refurbishment of the floral clock monument, and just last year the new lighthouse feature.
Each year, our faithful board members and an army of DHS volunteers strive to make Dunnville a scenic and beautiful place to live. They plant all our community flower beds, weed and maintain them, and then clean them out at season’s end. Dunnville owes them a debt of gratitude.
We all feel proud of our charming little town, don’t we?
I would like to personally thank each board member who continues to contribute: Susan Emery, Nelly Engelage, Petra Kruis-Daly (secretary), Ellen Guenther (treasurer), Wray McLean, Melanie Ruigrok, Marilyn Stavinga, Sharon Sykes, and Debbie Thomas. Joining our board this month is Jennifer Miller. I am grateful for your talents, passion, enthusiasm, and contributions!
DHS has also been blessed with many generous community partners who faithfully donate their time, money, and resources to our club. Konkle Farm & Greenhouses donates all our flowers each spring for planting. Egger Truck and Machine faithfully gets up early and waters our gardens throughout the growing season. And Jeff’s Outdoors assists on Clean Up Day. Thank you so much for your ongoing support!
And finally, we have such a dedicated and faithful membership. Our members support our club financially and physically. They show up for our program nights, support our presence at various events, and give us the ability to do what we do best … which is to make Dunnville a better place.
If you are wondering what we are all about, maybe I have piqued your interest! Why not join us for our AGM on November 17? We will enjoy a potluck dinner before the meeting (6-9 p.m.). Come on out and join in the fun.
Thank you everyone for making my job a gratifying one. I have been so proud to serve you. Don’t worry, I’m not going anywhere and will still be part of the DHS board. But it’s time for new leaders to stretch their wings. And as always, keep thinking green!
