DUNNVILLE—Residents looking for a meaningful way to give back this winter are invited to bundle up and join True Experience for the Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY), a national fundraising event that supports various charities.
CNOY is a family-friendly winter walk held annually in communities across Canada to raise awareness and vital funds for people experiencing hurt, hunger, and homelessness.

“On this meaningful night, neighbours, families, and local organizations come together to brave the cold in solidarity with those whose lives are affected by poverty, housing instability, and mental health challenges,” said True Experience Executive Director Rhonda Geyer.
It was through the passion of Haldimand resident Jade Davis-Phillips that True Experience got involved in the fundraiser, as Geyer said Davis-Phillips “believed deeply that the organization was the perfect fit for CNOY.”
Geyer continued, “Recognizing True Experience’s long-standing commitment to supporting adults living with mental illness through housing, outreach, and vital community programs, they championed the idea of bringing CNOY to Dunnville. Their belief helped ignite a movement that now brings our community together to walk with purpose and compassion.”
By participating and helping to fundraise, residents have the opportunity to make a direct contribution supporting the essential supports and services offered through True Experience, which Geyer explained create “safety, connection, and hope for individuals who need it most” in the community.
“CNOY reminds us that when our community walks together, we help warm even the coldest nights.”
Geyer praised the event as more than just a fundraiser, but a walk centred on empathy, awareness, and community solidarity.
“Its core values align closely with the mission of True Experience and the spirit of Dunnville as a whole,” said Geyer. “CNOY encourages participants to step into the cold, even briefly, to reflect on the challenges faced by individuals who struggle with poverty, housing insecurity, mental health concerns, and social isolation.”
She continued, “This simple but symbolic act mirrors True Experience’s commitment to understanding, supporting, and advocating for adults living with mental illness. Both CNOY and True Experience believe strongly in compassion, dignity, and the importance of creating safe, inclusive spaces where people feel seen, supported, and valued.”
She believes the fundraiser’s focus on walking together, side by side, reinforces the belief that meaningful change happens when a community stands united.
“It also reflects Dunnville’s long-standing tradition of rallying around neighbours in need, lifting each other up, and ensuring no one is left behind,” said Geyer.
Referencing Dunnville’s national Smile Cookie campaign wins over the past years, Geyer playfully challenged the community to once again put the town in the national spotlight.
“Our town and county are also incredibly competitive so who knows, maybe together we can claim another #1 across Canada title once again. With the heart, spirit, and determination of our community, anything is possible,” she said.
Currently, the hunt is on for team captains to help organize and lead the initiative. Geyer described the ideal captain as someone who is “enthusiastic, organized, and committed to True Experience’s mission.”
Responsibilities will include recruiting walkers, motivating their team to reach fundraising goals, sharing information, and leading by example on walk day.
She encouraged everyone interested to sign up as either a captain or a walker and to get involved through fundraising, or even just sharing the event on social media to help spread the word.
CNOY will take place on February 28. Teams will check in at 4 p.m. at the Dunnville Legion, with the walk set to start at 5 p.m. Participants can choose either a 2km or 5km route and will reconvene back at the Legion for a celebratory dinner. Walkers will have the chance to stop for refreshments and a restroom break if needed mid-walk at True Experience’s main office.
“By participating, fundraising, or volunteering, you’re helping create your own ‘epidemic of kindness and compassion’ right here in Dunnville,” Geyer said. “Every step, every donation, and every act of support sends a message that our community cares, stands together, and is committed to making a difference in the lives of adults living with mental illness. Join us and be part of the magic.”
