Writers Group fosters supportive space for aspiring authors

CAYUGA—On the third Thursday of each month, a small group of writers gathers at Cayuga United Church, seeking support and inspiration for their writing projects.

Founded by John Passfield, a local author with 38 novels and novellas to his name, the group provides a welcoming, fee-free space for writers to develop their craft and share their work.

Passfield, who is published by Rocks Mills Press and available on platforms like Amazon, created the group to counter the often-critical atmosphere of formal writing courses, which he felt offered little constructive feedback for new writers.

“Writing courses and publishers often treat work as a final product,” Passfield said. “They offer generalities but don’t help much with the development of beginning writers.”

At each two-hour meeting, the writers divide their time equally, allowing members to choose how they use their slot – whether reading aloud, discussing a work-in-progress, or seeking feedback on specific challenges.

The group’s approach is grounded in the belief that each writer is unique, and with practice and thoughtful input, they can grow into their own best editors, Passfield explained.

As they sip tea and coffee, group members share and discuss a range of genres, from science fiction and fantasy to political satire and family memoir.

This inclusive, collaborative spirit ensures that each writer’s work is seen as a work-in-progress, fostering helpful suggestions rather than harsh critiques, said Passfield.

Currently, five writers from Haldimand and nearby Binbrook attend regularly, and while the group is open to welcoming new members, they’ve capped membership at eight to ensure each writer has ample time to present.

The meetings, held from 7-9 p.m., are scheduled in the evening to accommodate both retired and working-age writers.

While no public events are planned, Passfield sees value in practicing in a supportive setting, noting, “Practicing under encouraging conditions will make future public readings attractive.”
