Re: Strong Mayor Powers, Pope Leo XIV

Shocked and disappointed re: strong mayor powers

Dear Editor,

I was shocked and disappointed to learn of Mayor Bentley’s decision to accept strong mayor powers. As a resident who values democracy in its fullest sense, this move deeply concerns me. It makes me question the value of voting for my ward councillor – someone chosen to represent my views at council – when those views can now be overridden by a single individual.

Let me be clear: I am not saying Mayor Bentley is a bad person. But I firmly believe that the safest and most ethical direction for our community is one guided by the collective voice of all elected representatives, not by the authority of one. Allowing one individual the power to unilaterally terminate staff – dedicated professionals who have done their due diligence, followed the proper process, and acted in the public interest — is not only dangerous, it’s undemocratic. Even more troubling is the lack of transparency: council was not even informed before this decision was made. How can transparency be claimed when it wasn’t even considered?

Haldimand County has been well served by its staff and councillors, all of whom were legitimately selected for the positions that they are in. Year after year, they’ve demonstrated fiscal responsibility and a genuine commitment to public service. Our residents overwhelmingly rejected the strong mayor model. How then are we to accept this abrupt and undemocratic shift?

We must speak up. This is not just about one decision – it’s about the integrity of our local democracy.

Pleased to learn about strong mayor powers

 Dear Mayor Bentley,

We are pleased to learn that you have decided to accept the strong mayor powers as reported in the May 8 edition of The Haldimand Press. We fully understand the need for you to make your decision and believe those reasons are very well described in The Press reporting.

We were apprehensive about strong mayor powers when they were initially announced by Premier Ford. However, with the activities of many of the elected Haldimand councillors who have failed to gauge the wishes of many Haldimand County residents – some even challenging and belittling residents making appearances before Council, then choosing to act according to their own agendas, influences, and motivations – such displays can only be viewed as to be not in the best interests of Haldimand County.

When the same councillors voted to turn the MZO application over to the developer, it really concerned us that they do not appear to be up to handling their responsibilities. We completely understand why it was necessary for you to accept the strong mayor powers.

We also fully agree with the comment that MPP Bobbi Ann Brady made in The Press, that if there is a mayor in this province that she would trust with strong mayor powers, it is Shelley Ann Bentley, as she puts the people of Haldimand County first all the time.

We wish you well and know that you will use this newly acquired tool wisely and to the benefit of Haldimand County and its residents.

On the Election of His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV

Habemus papum – we have a Pope! The Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board (BHNCDSB), in union with Catholics around the globe, celebrates the election of His Holiness, Pope Leo XIV.

The new Holy Father became the 267th Supreme Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church on Thursday, May 8, 2025. The moment was marked by the traditional rising of white smoke from the Sistine Chapel, followed by Pope Leo XIV’s first appearance and blessing from St. Peter’s Basilica. His message to the world emphasized charity, kindness, and inclusivity. He called us all to be Pilgrims of Hope and “disciples of Christ.”

“The Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board is committed to faith-based education and is deeply inspired by the leadership of our new Holy Father,” said Director of Education Mike McDonald.

As a sign of mourning for the late Holy Father, all flags at BHNCDSB schools and buildings were flown at half-mast for Pope Francis. BHNCDSB eagerly anticipates the opening of its newest school, Pope Francis Catholic Elementary in Caledonia (September 2025), commemorating that legacy.

Pope Leo XIV, formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, brings a wealth of pastoral and administrative experience to the papacy.  Pope Leo has a deep commitment to youth, inclusivity, and social justice, which will resonate with our school communities.

“We look forward to teaching our students about Pope Leo XIV’s message and continuing to foster a learning environment that features excellence in learning while living in Christ,” shared Chair of the Board, Carol Luciani.

BHNCDSB invites all students, staff, and families to join in prayer for Pope Leo XIV as he begins his sacred ministry. May our new Holy Father shepherd us, his flock, with the grace of God the Father and the counsel of the Holy Spirit.

In partnership and hope,

Carol Luciani, Board Chair,

& Mike McDonald, Director of Education
