A reader stopped me at the bank this week and asked me if I wrote From The Kitchens of Haldimand and then asked if I would please list some things that baking items could be replaced with. I didn’t think to ask her name and feel bad about that. Thanks for asking though, as I like to honour our readers’ requests. She commented that she enjoyed reading The Press and also that there have been several times that she didn’t have certain things on hand when she wanted to bake or cook something, and it would be helpful if I shared a list. It was not difficult for me to do as I often substitute things in recipes and it works out well in most cases. I did have that time that I accidentally added cornstarch instead of baking soda and it was an absolute disaster – and the time I made a grape pie that even the dog wouldn’t eat! Dogs shouldn’t eat grapes, anyway, so it was a good thing.
This Sloppy Joe recipe is from the Phillips family of Caledonia. I got it several years ago when I worked with Robin Phillips at Caledonia Centennial Public School and it is a good one. These are best when made with maple or molasses flavoured brown beans. HP sauce can be used in place of the Worcestershire sauce.
The meatball pizza recipe is one that Tyler, Nathan, and Madison Vowles contributed to the Mary Poppins cookbook years ago. It is easy to make as the meat is already cooked and only needs to be thawed before using.
