County should follow own regulations re: Nanticoke industrial lands

To the Editor,

To the Honourable Mayor Bentley and Members of Council,

Last fall before the election, Councillor Tony Dalimonte asked the planner about the Empire Homes project in Hagersville.

The planner said that as long as it was within the urban boundary and was according to the Official Plan (Plan), it could not be stopped. The Plan was adhered to then. Why are you trying to skirt around the Plan when it comes the setback around heavy industry?

The Official Plan states the following: “An existing 3 kilometre (1.9 mile) Industrial Influence Area is delineated in Schedule ‘A.2’ around the exterior properties of the steel mill, oil refinery, hydro generating station and sites for the purpose of restricting new land uses which are incompatible with the major industrial operations.”

“To protect such industrial uses from incompatible land uses which would detract from their ability to operate effectively.”

The Haldimand County Plan states there is to be a 3km setback around heavy industry. The council has a legal responsibility to uphold and adhere to the Plan.

It is time to rescind the MZO and adhere to the Plan to defend our industry and the county.

Leaving you with something positive, you should be getting together with Stelco and Esso to build an industrial sewer plant. I’m sure they would go for it. The costs could be split three ways, and even the federal and provincial governments might chip in.

 Sincerely,

Grant Church
