CAYUGA—The last warm weather is being seen before winter, a signal for the start of the high school cross country season for 2022.
Cayuga Secondary School took eight runners to Christie Lake on September 28 to test their fitness against schools not only from the Golden Horseshoe, but from as far as Oshawa, Guelph, and Orangeville.
Ethan Kindree opened the show for the locals, finishing sixth in the Novice Boys 4km race, only 12.9 seconds behind the leader, with a 10:21.3 time. In the same race, Josh Almose was 21st in 11:20.3 and Simon Burrill 39th in 12:01.3.
In the Junior girls 5km, Ella Long and Addison Jepson were 38th and 64th respectively, in times of 18:55.1 and 20:35.5.
In the Junior boys 5km, 2021 OFSAA qualifier Gavin Mathieson was 21.1 seconds behind the winner, as he finished fourth in 13:43.0.
Rounding out the day was Ella Stroud, who ran the Senior girls 6km in 30:41.6 to claim the 101st spot.
First race for other local schools will be the AABHN Championships on October 19.
