HAGERSVILLE—The Niagara RiverHawks came to the Hagersville Hawks’ nest on December 7 and were looking to win.
The first period saw the RiverHawks score first. Then at 11:23, Hagersville Hawk Brendan Sullivan scored a powerplay goal with Trent Chute and Dreyden Cruz-General picking up the assists. Seconds later Niagara took the lead again. Hagersville’s Dylan Wardell fought back and landed a short-handed, unassisted goal to send the teams to the dressing rooms tied at 2. Shots on goal were RiverHawks 30 to Hawks 12.
The second period saw the RiverHawks score two unanswered goals.
The coaches must have given the boys a good pep talk between the second and third period, as the Hawks came out flying. Wardell scored a powerplay goal with Bevan Aitchison picking up the assist at the 7:58 mark. Then Marcus Lazarevic scored just over a minute later on the powerplay with Wardell and Jarett Moriarity picking up the assists. The period ended 4-4, forcing overtime.
The three-on-three overtime saw both teams have chances to end the game, but it was a two-on-one rush down the ice with Moriarity passing the puck to Carson Trevisani, who took a great shot and scored, to give Hawks the 5-4 overtime win.
The final shot count stood at RiverHawks 55 to Hagersville 37. The Player of the Game was Trevisani.
The Hawks will be travelling to Dunnville on Friday, December 13, and are back home Saturday, December 14 take on the Grimsby Peach Kings.
