CAYUGA—The soggy weather on Saturday, April 29, 2023 didn’t dampen the crowds at the first of four Household Hazardous Waste and Waste Electronic Events scheduled for Haldimand this year. The waste collected here can be dangerous to people and the environment unless disposed of properly.

Allan Forster, from Environmental Operations, commented that there were line-ups to get into the Cayuga Secondary School event even before it opened. Typically, Forster says that about 400 cars go through the drop-off events, with this first event seeing 360 residents visit. The items that are accepted range from paint products and batteries to medications. Electronics including computers, cell phones, and home office equipment are also happily accepted.

“Last year in Cayuga we diverted approximately 150 200-litre drums worth of hazardous waste from entering the landfill or the environment,” said Forster on the success of past events.

Missed this event? Don’t worry, the next event will happen on June 10 at McKinnon Park Secondary School in Caledonia, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
