Letter to the editor —Thompson Creek School needs a crossing guard

To the Editors,

I would like to express my utter dismay and anger toward not one, but two very impatient and apparently entitled parents who dropped their kids off at Thompson Creek School one morning last week.

The first incident that happened took place as I was about to turn left to enter the drop off loop. With my turning signal very clearly on, I patiently waited my turn to enter the back parking lot where the drop off loop is located, as did a number of other parents ahead of me. There was, however, one very impatient man in line behind me, who decided he had waited far too long and wasn’t having any more of it. When my turn came up to enter the parking lot, he pulled out of line and sped past me. I nearly hit him because of his sense of entitlement and lack of patience. Yet this person very clearly and rudely gestured at me and yelled at me for his bad driving and poor choice. I know who you are, and I reported you to the school principal.

The second incident happened a few short moments later in the drop off loop itself. Parents know they are expected to line up in a single line and wait their turn to have their children safely exit the vehicle. Well, most parents know this. But one very impatient mom decided she had the right to pull up alongside the cars and, as a result, nearly hit my six-year-old daughter as she attempted to exit my car. I try to remind both of my kids to exit the car on the driver’s side to avoid situations like this, because sadly this is not the first time my daughter has had this exact near miss. I don’t know who you are, lady, but I described you and your vehicle to the principal when I reported you as well. It’s a single lane, and I would greatly appreciate it if those impatient parents would remember that. Yes, I get that the staff on duty sometimes wave other cars through who have dropped their kids off further back to help speed up leaving the loop, but that was not the case this time. Parents, if you’re in the habit of doing this, I am begging you to be more patient and please wait your turn like the rest of us do. What will it take to get this through to you? My child, or someone else’s child, getting hurt because of your impatience? Perhaps consider leaving your house a few minutes earlier if you’re in that much of a hurry to be on your way.

To Councillor Bernie Corbett: it is my understanding that, after discussing these incidents with the principal, she and another parent are working on getting a crossing guard at the school to cut down on these near misses and make dropping kids off and picking them up a safe process. I am imploring you to please look into this matter and do what you can to keep our children safe.
