Local secondary school girls invited to Dream It * Be It

To The Haldimand Press

HALDIMAND—Soroptimist International of Grand Erie is proud to announce the eighth annual “Dream It * Be It” free career support event for secondary school girls, alongside our supportive club Haldimand-Norfolk Soroptimist.

We are excited to welcome two keynote speakers at this virtual event. Fauzia Agbonhi, slam poet and author, will share her journey. Jocelyn Larocque is a Canadian Olympian Team Canada 2011 World Champion. Both will speak on the day’s topic, PowHERful. The Dream It * Be It goal is, “Through education and access to role models, girls will be empowered to pursue their career goals and reach their full potential.”

Registration is open for this free event and space is limited, so register today at soroptimistgranderie.ca.

Dream It * Be It targets girls in grades 9-12 who face obstacles to their future success. It provides girls with access to professional role models, career education, and the resources to live their dreams.

The local club Soroptimist International of Grand Erie has been working with an advisory steering committee of 15 local girls at their think tanks to learn what tools, topics, and resources they are most interested in. With the challenge of COVID-19 we knew it was important to continue our work with the girls, who will still face the unique challenges and obstacles that go along with being a woman.

The April 9 event will have a career panel event with professional women from traditional to non-traditional vocations, including Carrie Woolley-Schuyler, UN 2021 award, Farmer Animal Sciences; psychologist Kristin; and carpenter Allie.

A women’s panel of graduated advisory steering committee members will speak on their experiences, challenges, and finding their strengths once leaving home to continue their education or join the workforce.
