June 16, 1956 –August 9, 2026
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Darrell Day on August 9, 2026, following a courageous battle with cancer. Darrell passed surrounded by the love of his family. He was a loving husband and best friend to his wife, Anja, for 46 years; devoted dad to Christine Neilson (Tom) and Nicole (Tyler); and supportive and loving “Grandpa Darrell” to Jake, Isaac, Eli and Evelyn. Predeceased by his parents, Bob and Joan Day. Darrell will be dearly missed by his loving aunts and many good friends. Darrell was a lifelong member of Local 67 and a pipefitter by trade. Throughout his career, his knowledge, work ethic and leadership took him from the field to roles as Foreman, General Foreman, Superintendent and Manager. He was especially proud of the many projects he worked on across the country. Darrell was incredibly knowledgeable and had a remarkable ability to remember even the smallest details. He was well loved by his coworkers and earned the respect and admiration of many throughout his industry. Darrell had a passion for fishing and shared many memories and great catches with his fishing buddies, from days spent on the ice and on the lakes close to home to adventures in the far north. In his later years and throughout retirement, he spent much of his time at the cottage, a place he proudly called “the best place on earth” and his happy place. More than anything, he loved that it became a place for his family and friends to gather, spend time together, and make memories that will carry on for years to come. Darrell’s greatest pride was always his family. He was happiest surrounded by those he loved, whether cheering on his grandkids at hockey, spending time at the cottage or simply enjoying everyday moments together. Throughout his life, he taught us countless lessons through his words and by the way he lived, worked hard, and always put his family first. He leaves us with memories, lessons and traditions that will stay with us forever. Many thanks to Dr. S. Hotte and Dr. E. Shaw and their team at the Juravinski Cancer Centre for their compassionate care.
A private interment will be held with family. Family and friends are invited to gather in celebration of Darrell’s life at the Lions Hall, 100 Haddington Street, Caledonia, on Monday, August 17, from 4 – 7 p.m., with words of remembrance shared at 6 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to Stedman Hospice or South Coast Community Cares for Cancer would be greatly appreciated by the family. Though our hearts are broken, we are grateful for the love, memories and the great life we shared with him. He will forever remain in our hearts, but for now, he has gone fishing. Friends and family are invited to send condolences and sign the Book of Memories at
