It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Norman Douglas Maher, who passed away peacefully at Norfolk General Hospital in Simcoe, in the arms of his beloved wife, Barbara, on July 25, 2026, in his 91st year. Norman grew up in Midland, Ontario. He met Barbara at the young age of 14, and together they shared 70 wonderful years of marriage. Norman worked at Dofasco as a crane operator for 26 years before retiring at the age of 56 in 1992. Retirement didn’t last long, though. He decided to become a crossing guard for the City of Hamilton, working first as a spare guard before taking a full-time post at King and Lottridge. Over the next 27 years, he built countless friendships with the children and their families and was honoured to be named crossing guard of the year. He was truly loved, often receiving thoughtful gifts from the kids and parents whose lives he touched. He spoke about those children as if they were his own grandchildren, always so proud of them. After 27 years of service, he finally hung up his stop sign and whistle. Norman was a kind, generous, and hardworking man whose family was always his greatest priority. His children and grandchildren meant the world to him, and you could always see the pride in his face as they reached life’s milestones and celebrated their accomplishments. With his lunchbox in hand, he headed off to work every day, setting an example of dedication and commitment. Norman loved sharing stories about growing up in Midland, the snowy winters, the family dogs, sleigh rides, and the many adventures of his childhood. His stories were endless, and he loved telling every one of them. He also cherished family vacations and road trips. You always knew he was relaxed when he was singing along to George Jones or Alabama as the miles passed by. Norman had an infectious smile, kind eyes, and a gentle soul. He had a way of making people feel welcome and loved, and his quiet strength, warmth, and unwavering devotion to his family will never be forgotten. Norman is lovingly remembered by his wife, Barbara; his children, Deborah (Richard), Norman (Susan), and Darrell; his grandchildren, Melissa (Blair), Barbara (Sean), Amanda (Rick), Shelly (Jason), Ryan (Danielle), Samantha, Keagan, Kenedy, Victoria (Keenan), Ellie-Mae, and Amanda-Jeanne; and his 14 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and his beloved grandson, Douglas, in 2018. Family and friends are invited to celebrate Norman’s life on Saturday, August 29, 2026, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 79, 200 West Street, Simcoe, Ontario. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to the Kidney Foundation of Canada would be greatly appreciated.
