CAYUGA—The crowd gathered under grey skies and persistent rain for the Remembrance Day ceremony in Cayuga to pay their respects to those who died fighting for freedom. On the grounds of the Cayuga Courthouse, Legion President Jeff Hunt honoured the fallen with dignity.
“The veterans that gave the ultimate sacrifice,” he said. “It’s very important to pass this along to the youth to bring it on forward for the act of remembrance.”
After the ceremony, attendees were invited to a Remembrance Day luncheon and announcements for grants received. Jeff Hunt along with MP Leslyn Lewis, MPP Bobbi Ann Brady, and Councillor John Metcalfe each delivered a speech to acknowledge the grants and honour our veterans.
“2022 is a very special year as we officially recognize two grants that have been received by the Royal Canadian Legion #159 Cayuga to help us rebuild and grow,” Hunt announced.
The Legion received $25,000 from the New Horizons Grant for Seniors for the installation of a kitchen exhaust hood and fire suppression system, which will provide a safe environment for volunteers to prepare meals for veterans, seniors, and the community at large.
The second grant of $48,100 was received from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. This operating stream grant over 12 months will help the Cayuga Legion continue operating its facilities, including assisting with operational and equipment costs to ensure long-term sustainability, and delivering programs for the community by hiring a coordinator to develop new programs and events.
“These grants go a long wat to help sustain our Legion and benefit the community,” Hunt added. To see so many people coming together to pause in an act of remembrance is testament to who we are as Canadians. He concluded, “They served ‘til death, why not we?”
