Letter to the Editor—A message from our leaders: Be patient, understanding, and kind when accessing our care

Dear patients, families and communities we serve,

We are currently facing the most significant healthcare crisis of our time. As a hospital, we have a responsibility to do everything we can to protect our teams and those in our care.

Everyone at West Haldimand General Hospital is committed to giving you the best quality healthcare possible. This has been our commitment for nearly 60 years, and our physicians, nurses, and staff will never lose sight of the quality of care as we move into the future.

Over the past 18-months, we have seen an increase in our front-line workers receiving abuse and hostility, online and off. Most recently, it has gotten worse. Our staff has been faced with physical and verbal abuse, and harassment. Some individuals are now refusing to follow our visiting guidelines when entering our facility, such as wearing a hospital-issued mask received at screening. These guidelines were put in place to protect the safety of our staff, patients, and their loved ones.

This type of behavior undermines the hard work and sacrifices of hospital staff, nurses, and physicians over the past 18 months. It has caused emotional distress, and it has been demoralizing to the very people who have dedicated their lives to serve.

To all of our staff: We are grateful for all that you’re doing and have done since the start of the global pandemic. We know it is not easy, and you have put yourself on the front line to keep the community safe from the get-go. You have all gone above and beyond every day to keep us safe.

Please know that there is an overwhelming majority in our community who support you and the enormous sacrifices you have made and continue to make during this pandemic.

The community has publicly shown their support and appreciation by writing cards and placing signs of praise and encouragement on their homes. Others supported the hospital with financial donations and delivered food for the workers, which was greatly appreciated.

As we enter the 4th wave of the pandemic, our healthcare professionals need to see the community’s support once again.

Each day, West Haldimand General and surrounding hospitals are facing rising pressure from COVID-19. We know people are growing tired of the pandemic, and that frustration is at an all-time high. But we need everyone to show a little more kindness and respect to the staff, nurses, and physicians who continue to selflessly work around the clock to provide care to those who need it most.

So please, when you do need our care, be kind. Be patient. Be understanding. Our staff really need that right now.
